History
of Mount Zion Baptist Church
In 1861, some members of the
Spotsylvania community sought to come together for the purpose of praising and
worshipping God. Led by the Reverend Thompson, the group built a worship place
of brushes, called "bush arbor," which was a secret place to worship
since our forefathers could not worship openly. From this place and experiences
emerged the Mount Zion Baptist Church.
After the Civil War ended and the
slaves were freed, Rev. Daniel Washington became the Spiritual leader. The
members acquired a tract of land along the road now known as Harrison Road, upon
which a log cabin was built for worship services, and many people travel great
distances to attend these services.
Since its humble beginning, many
pastors have served Mt. Zion, on whose principles the church still stands. With
the guidance of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and under the leadership of the
present pastor, the Reverend Charles W. Wormley, who now serves as the Mt. Zion
pastor, the church has added many ministries and continues to grow. With such a
rapidly growing congregation, Pastor Wormley and the congregation began actively
seeking God's guidance in securing an expansion plan for a new facility. Plans
are now in place for this new worship building.
We praise God and thank Him for His
grace, which links us to a glorious past, blessed present and a challenging
future.
And our journey, it continues...
